The Bonsmara founded in 1964 is a cross breed of cattle known for its high quality beef. The development of the breed was carried out in South Africa based on scientific experiments carried out by the late Professor Jan Bonsma (1909-1992) and named after him. The breed consists of 5/8 Afrikaner (Sanga-type), 3/16 Hereford and 3/16 Shorthorn cattle and is well adapted to the subtropical savannah regions. The breed is a combination of the adaptability of the Afrikaner, the meat production of the Hereford and the milk production of the Shorthorn breeds. The Bonsmara breed has gained popularity throughout Africa as a beef and dual-purpose breed while the breed is also popular in South America, North America, Canada and Australia.
