The breed of cat is distinct due to its lack of a hair coat. Although they lack a coat, whiskers and eyebrows may be present. The color of the skin indicates what the color of the fur would be if it were present. The breed of cat originated in Canada in 1966 when a kitten was discovered with a natural genetic mutation for hairlessness. Not all Sphynx cats are totally hairless and some may have varying degrees of hairlessness. Sphynx cats are medium sized cats with wedgeshaped heads with large to very large ears. The regulations require that the abdomen be fully rounded. Sphynxes are energetic with extraverted personalities; they are intelligent, curious and affectionate. The Sphynx ranks seventh in popularity among the breeds recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association and has been vying for championship status by this world’s largest breed registry since 2002.
