ISRAEL JOURNAL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
EDITORIAL
Two months ago we sadly took our leave of Prof. Arieh Hadani a colleague and prominent figure on the veterinary scene in Israel and abroad, who died at the age of 81. Prof. Hadani served as associate editor of the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine for 17 years (1960-1977). In 1991, at a time when the journal suffered a severe crisis he became the editor-in-chief and was successful in putting the journal back on track by regaining both international status and recognition. He proceeded to serve as editor for three years. Prof. Hadani was a recognized expert in veterinary entomology. His main topics were ticks and tickborn diseases of cattle. As such he was an advisor to the F.A.O and served for a few years in Latin American countries. His main contribution to our profession and veterinary medicine in Israel was while serving as the Head of the Kimron Veterinary Institute in Israel during the years 1965-1977. Prof. Hadani was a man of vision who had the conviction of also executing his ideas. He advanced significantly the research capacity of the institute by recruiting young scientists, establishing new research laboratories, and widening the scope of the existing laboratory diagnostic services . Under his leadership the Kimron Veterinary Institute gained the reputation of a research institute and became affiliated academically with the Faculty of Medicine of Tel Aviv University. Many of us who were recruited by Prof. Hadani and were given all possible support to advance our research projects will never forget him. The central article in the current issue is a review of 21 episodes of disease outbreaks among farm animals in Israel. It is a comprehensive description of these events, their etiology and the measures taken by the Israeli Veterinary Services to deal with them. Its importance lies in providing the veterinary community with the ability to make conclusions and become equipped with the knowledge for effectively confronting future outbreaks.
I hope you find the reading interesting and enjoyable. Zeev Trainin
